SOUTH BEND — Notre Dame students will volunteer in the South Bend community on Saturday as part of the annual “Back the Bend” service event.
Beginning at 10 a.m. on the Irish Green on campus, the students will work from 11 a.m. to 2:55 p.m. spreading mulch in the Near Northwest Neighborhood, preparing Kelly Park for Arbor Day, painting the inside of Mills House and amphitheater at Leeper Park, clearing the interior of Kizer House, visiting homebound seniors and leading local seniors on tours of Notre Dame and Indiana University South Bend.
The mulching of areas in the Northwest Neighborhood is intended to cover soil that could contain amounts of lead that have been left from lead-based paint and reduce exposure for children playing outside.
The event, now in its ninth year, has attracted as many as 600 student volunteers in the past.
